That was an MIT spin-off, nuTonomy and it was in August last year in Singapore.
Continuing on my earlier posts on a few interesting data sets on some select startups (and scale ups) in the autonomous driving eco-system………….
The Boston based startup nuTonomy has chalked up quite a few interesting partnerships. The most recent one, in early June ’17, was with Lyft to bring its first self driving ride hailing service in Boston. The partnership is collaborative R&D based with no financial arrangement between the two companies.
Then early last month, following the technology – automotive companies’ alliances, nuTonomy announced one with the PSA Groupe (Peugeot, Citroen and DS) for autonomous vehicle testing in Singapore. This can help integrate nuTonomy’s technology into the PSA vehicles and help its ambitious goal of deploying robotaxis in Singapore by 2018.
nuTonomy also partnered with Grab, the ride hailing service popular in Southeast Asia, in September last year. The partnership is considered as a step towards Singapore’s push for autonomous technology in transportation.
The startup indeed has strong links with the city-state of Singapore. Its 16M$ Series A funding in May last year led by Highland Capital Partners included participation from Singapore Economic Development Board (through its investment arm EDBI), Fontinalis Partners (co founded by Ford Motors’ Chairman Bill Ford) and other existing investors including Samsung Ventures and Signal Ventures. It is also closely working with Singapore MIT-Alliance for Research and Technology (SMART).
